Description: 
The Urban Youth Trauma Center’s Project T.R.I.U.M.P.H. (Trauma Resiliency through Integrated Urban Models: Partnerships for Hope) seeks to disseminate evidence-based practices to reduce and prevent behavioral health disparities resulting from community violence and traumatic stress with co-occurring substance abuse and behavioral problems among underserved youth and their families, with a special emphasis on low-income urban, ethnic, linguistic, and religious minority communities. UYTC’s goals are to: a) raise public awareness through NCTSN collaborations and a national media campaign that includes youth-oriented messages; b) provide specialized training and consultation to clinicians and youth serving providers; and c) engage and mobilize partners in strategic collaborations that include clinical, community, and policy constituents spanning across youth service system sectors to address community violence and behavioral health disparities. Project TRIUMPH will emphasize: 1) public awareness messages disseminated to youth, service providers, and general audiences in-person, online and through social media; 2) specialized intervention training provided to clinicians on manualized mental health services using the two UYTC family-focused treatment protocols of Trauma Systems Therapy for Adolescent Substance Abuse (for co-occurring trauma and substance abuse) and STRONG Families (for co-occurring trauma and disruptive behaviors); and 3) best practices prevention training and strategic engagement for clinicians, youth providers, community members, and young adults using the community violence prevention protocol YOUTH-CAN. Northwestern University Medical School, Center for Child Trauma Assessment and Planning

Description: 
The Center for Child Trauma Assessment, Services, and Interventions (CCTASI) at Northwestern University will assist child-serving systems in understanding, assessing, and responding to the developmental effects of child trauma. Our target populations include direct service providers, caregivers, and youth in child welfare, behavioral health, education, and juvenile justice settings. We will use a culturally sensitive lens and emphasize work with specific subpopulations or sectors where gaps in trauma-informed practices exist, such as early education, child welfare residential, juvenile probation, and transition age youth (TAY) programs. Our work will be carried out through developing and adapting resources and products; offering training and implementation support for providers, caregivers, and youth; and evaluating various types of trauma-focused interventions and products. Key activities include: 1) training and consulting on trauma-informed screening/assessment strategies (including the CANS-Trauma) across a range of settings; 2) developing and adapting trauma assessment resources for specific subpopulations (e.g., early childhood) and to support the meaningful use of trauma-informed assessment for family engagement, psychoeducation, and treatment/service planning; 3) training and implementation of NCTSN interventions/ service approaches for non-clinical, front line providers across settings, including the Think Trauma Toolkit and Resource Parent Curriculum; 4) adapting resources and interventions for different cultural groups to address health disparities, and; 5) raising public awareness on the developmental effects of trauma through development and widespread dissemination of child trauma resources, all to support building sustainable trauma-informed systems.

Yale Child Study Center, Childhood Violent Trauma Center

Description: 

The Childhood Violent Trauma Center (CVTC) at the Yale School of Medicine serves as the TSA Center in the area of acute/early/brief intervention, providing national expertise for early/acute responses to traumatic experiences, and supporting adaptation of early evidence-based treatments and service approaches following recent potentially traumatic events. CVTC will: 1) expand implementation of acute/early/brief trauma interventions, including the Child and Family Traumatic Stress Intervention (CFTSI) and treatment applications, as well as Law Enforcement Response to Children Exposed to Violence (LE CEV). CFTSI is currently the only evidence-based brief, early mental health treatment for children 7-18 who have experienced a recent traumatic event and will be expanded to new populations including young children (ages 3-6) and medically/physically injured children. The acute/early/brief trauma interventions provided with law enforcement, based on the Child Development Community Policing (CD-CP) program, will also be expanded; 2) increase capacity of child-serving systems, including law enforcement and CACs, to support identification, referral, access and utilization of evidence-based trauma informed approaches, by developing engagement strategies designed specifically to engage families in the early/acute phase of trauma response that have not yet reached out for mental health treatment and other services; 3) develop, train, implement and evaluate acute/early/brief screening and identification protocols and early mental health treatments by initiating three Learning Communities focused on young children, medically/physically injured children and CACs; and 4) provide leadership to NCTSN committees and collaborate with NCTSN centers to develop products.

University of Southern California, Trauma Services Adaptation (TSA) Center for Resiliency, Hope, and Wellness in Schools

Description: 
The purpose of the TSA for Schools is to promote trauma-informed schools and school systems nationwide by enabling all schools to deliver effective trauma practices and interventions and developing a supportive and nurturing environment for trauma-exposed students, especially those from the most vulnerable populations. To achieve this, we have three primary goals: The TSA for Schools will further develop and enhance implementation and broad dissemination of our effective school-based interventions: the Cognitive Behavioral Intervention for Schools (CBITS) for middle and high school students, Bounce Back for elementary school students, and Support for Students Exposed to Trauma (SSET) which can be delivered by non-clinical counselors and teachers. We will also further the development and dissemination of our trauma curriculum, Life Improvement for Teens (LIFT), an interactive, web-based curriculum for high school students relating to stress, trauma, or adverse experiences. For educators and other school staff, we will develop and disseminate online platforms to teach trauma-informed classroom skills and self-care to teachers. We will also partner with school safety experts to create a trauma-informed curriculum and training for school resource officers “school police”. The TSA for Schools will also help schools systematically develop a trauma-informed infrastructure by creating an online resource for school systems to evaluate their level of being trauma-informed that identifies their readiness to adopt trauma-informed practices and next steps in effective implementation, including ways to sustain practices through federal and other funding opportunities. Additionally, we will continue to host our Annual National Summit on Trauma Informed Schools.

TThe Early Trauma Treatment Network (ETTN) is a collaboration between the UCSF Child Trauma Research Program, the Child Violence Exposure Program at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center, Child Witness to Violence Project at Boston Medical Center, and Infant Team at Tulane University Medical Center. ETTN will address the needs of traumatized young/preschool children by increasing access to evidence-based trauma treatment and raising the standard of care in key service systems. ETTN will build capacity and competence in early trauma services in pediatrics, home visiting, childcare, mental health, child welfare, and the military system. To enhance access and standards of care, ETTN will create products and conduct activities that increase agency readiness and promote sustainability of evidence-based and promising interventions; conduct 4 Child-Parent Psychotherapy Learning Collaboratives (LC) and 1 Diversity Practice LC for mental health providers working with home visitors, child welfare, and military families; refine, pilot and disseminate Attachment Vitamins (AV); pilot Child and Family Traumatic Stress Intervention (CFTSI); assist in the development of Child and Family Traumatic Stress Intervention-Young Children (CFTSI-YC) ; create, pilot and disseminate training and educational materials for parents, pediatric care providers, childcare providers, home visitors, child welfare, and the military system; and collaborate with the National Center and NCTSN centers in cross-site evaluation, training, and dissemination.

Rady Children's Hospital, San Diego, The Chadwick Trauma-Informed Systems Dissemination and Implementation Project

Description: 

The Chadwick Center for Children and Families at Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego is creating the Center for Child Welfare Trauma-Informed Practice and Systems Change to support child welfare (CW) system efforts across the nation. The ultimate goal of the Center is for Trauma Informed (TI) knowledge and skills to permeate into CW organizational cultures, at all levels and among all roles, resulting in positive sustainable changes in the systems, policies, and practices which lead to better outcomes for children and families served by these systems. The Child Welfare Trauma Training Toolkit (CWTTT) is being transformed into four new curricula for use with specific targeted segments of the CW system workforce including caseworkers, supervisors, leaders (directors and managers), and support staff (receptionists, case aides, etc.). Information on how culture and trauma intersect is being wound into each of the curricula and all of them will be designed with a consultation/coaching framework. The Center is developing a system for training trainers across the country in these curricula and will provide continued support to these rostered trainers. Thoughtful consideration is being given to how to roll the adaptations out to communities that have already received the initial CWTTT training. Advanced training around topics such as secondary traumatic stress and screening and service array are also being developed. Additionally, the Center is working with CW training organizations to explore how TI concepts can be infused into existing core/foundational CW training.
